Find Me, by Rosie O'Donnell (2002)
Those of you hoping to find True Lesbian Confessions are going to be disappointed. Those hoping to get to know Rosie O'Donnell a little better are in luck.
But be aware that this is not an autobiography of the usual sort. Instead, it is the story of a friendship between Rosie and a woman with a multiple personality disorder. Prepare to be a little creeped. On the other hand, you can trust Rosie to lead you through it: just when I was getting a little TOO creeped, she knew to step in with a diversion chapter to give the reader a break.
There are some peeks into Rosie's life, and of course you can learn a lot about her through her touchingly candid and self-aware writing. But you're not going to find all the details about her life with Kelli, if that's what you're looking for.
Welcome, Silence: My Triumph Over Schizophrenia, by Carol North, M.D. (1987)
This inspiring story of mental illness is made all the more credible by its psychiatrist author. Carol North suffered from debilitating schizophrenia for years, yet still managed to attend medical school. Reading her first-person account of what it is like to experience schizophrenia, I felt I had a new understanding of the illness and a new respect for people who live with it.
